Tips to fuel young Athletes
from Registered Dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner!

Fuel your body with a Power Plate!
At each meal, create a Power Plate to keep you strong and energized. A Power Plate includes:
- Protein foods to repair muscle (like Eggland’s Best eggs, chicken, beans)
- Carb foods for energy (like oatmeal, whole grain bread, potatoes)
- Colorful fruits & vegetables to protect cells (like spinach, berries, carrots)
- Fats to support cells (like avocado, nuts, seeds)

Check your timing.
Being mindful of when you eat can help keep you fueled for your practices and games without feeling too full:
- 3 to 4 hours before a game or practice, eat a “power plate” balanced meal
- 1 to 2 hours before a game or practice, have an energizing bite to stay fueled

Get supercharged with sleep.
Sleep is the best way to recharge tired muscles and restore energy. Shut off video games, TV, computers, and phones at least 1 hour before bed to get your body more relaxed and ready to fall asleep.
